Anjali Bhagwat managed to pull off a bronze medal behind two Chinese who set a World record 400 out of 400 in women’s air rifle in the fifth Asian Air Gun championship in Nanchang, China, on Friday.
Anjali had to fight it out for the bronze against another Chinese and won the medal by a 0.2 point margin, with a total of 500.4. She shot 397 in qualification and 103.4 in the final to outwit the Chinese Chang Jing who shot 398 in qualification but only 102.2 in the final.
It was only her third Asian level medal for Anjali who had won the air rifle bronze in Nanjing in 2008 and the standard rifle prone silver in Langkawi in 2000. She had won the World Cup gold in Fort Benning and the World Cup Final gold in Milan in 2003.
Mampi makes final
Mampi Das also made the final with a score of 394, after topping the shoot-off for the last two places in the final from among six, but ended eighth as she could garner only 100.9 in the final. Shriyanka Sadangi missed out in the shoot-off for a spot in the final, and finished tenth.
The Chinese, Yu Dan and Wu Liuxi won the gold and silver with 504.0 and 503.7. The Indian team was able to take the silver behind the Chinese.
Vikas wins silver
There was some more cheer for the Indian camp, as Vikas Dhama won the men’s youth silver medal in air pistol, 6.6 points behind the Chinese Li Hang. The boys, however, took the team gold, 12 points ahead of the Chinese as the third member of the Chinese squad was below par.
In junior men’s air rifle, Akhil Sheoran won the bronze and the team also took the bronze medal, three points behind the Koreans.
