National badminton for differently abled

The 13th National badminton tournament for the differently abled will be held on September 15 and 16 at the Madras Race Club here. The tournament will be jointly conducted by the Rotary Clubs of Chennai Infocity and Ambattur, in association with Badminton Sports Association of India for Challenged.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, Usharani Kannan, President, Rotary Club of Chennai Infocity, said that the tournament will see close to 150 players from 17 states participating across nine categories. “In addition to Arjuna awardees Ramesh Tikaram from Karnataka, M. Srinivasa Rao from Andhra Pradesh and Parul D. Parmar from Gujarat, B. Anand Kumar, the World No. 2 in the single leg below knee category, will also be participating,” she said.

While matches in eight categories will be held at the Madras Race Club, wheelchair badminton matches will be held at Ceebros Shyamala Garden. A sum close to Rs. 50,000 will be disbursed among 30 awardees as prize money. — Sports Reporter
