Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi suffered a shock second—round exit at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament after losing to Czech Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer of Germany 1—6, 6—7 (9) in the men’s doubles event here.

The third—seeded Indian Express duo, who got a bye in the first round, were no match for their opponents as they went down without a fight in the first set.

And though they managed to pose some challenge in the second, the Czech—German pair proved to be too strong for the Indians.

Paes and Bhupathi were playing together here for the first time since 2004 when they lifted the Rogers Cup doubles title. Besides 2004, they had also won in 1997.

Bhupathi, partnering with other players, won the doubles title three more times here.

Berdych and Mayer, who got the better of Spanish duo of Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez in the first round, won back—to—back matches as a team for the first time.
