South United FC cruised to a 4-0 victory over Eagles FC in a second division I-League match here on Sunday.
Earlier, Southern Samity dropped two vital points with a 1-1 draw against a struggling Lunagmual FC.
Southern Samity entered the match as the joint leader with 13 points and was the favourite to collect a full three points. The Kolkata side now has 14 points from six matches, with Mumbai Tigers and NRB Vasco FC not far behind, trailing by just a point.
South United FC — the team is not in contention for a spot in the main draw — took the lead against Eagles FC through a 25th minute goal from Vinoth Kumar. Vinoth brought down a cross inside the penalty area with his right foot, switched the ball over to his left and sent it into the goal.
Just before half-time, Eagles FC defender Mathew George attempted a clearance to cut off a cross from Amoes, but his two-footed dive only resulted in a big deflection into his goal.
Match officials, surprisingly, decided to award the goal to Amoes.
Stephen then made it 3-0 and Amoes scored the local team’s fourth goal late in the match.
The striker started a run down the right flank and shrugged off two markers in a display of superior physical strength.
An exquisite finish at the far-post with the outside of his right boot revealed a lethal mix of contrasting qualities.
The results:
Southern Samity 1 (K.C. David Ngaihte) drew with Lunagmual FC 1 (L. Isaac).
South United FC 4 (Amoes 2, Vinoth Kumar, Stephen) bt Eagles FC 0.
Monday’s match: Hindustan FC, New Delhi vs. Mumbai Tigers.
