The 2013 Champions League final may pit two Bundesliga clubs against one another, but UEFA president Michel Platini does not believe the Borussia Dortmund-Bayern Munich spectacle in Wembley signals the start of a German dominance in European football.
“It is cyclical. One year you are stronger, depending on the coach, players, referees,” Platini told Guardian on Saturday.
“Whoever wins is the best team of that year, and I give the cup to the winner. In the Champions League, there are no bad teams,” added the Frenchman, who heads European football’s governing body.
Bayern were the last German club to win the Champions League, back in 2001 over Valencia — their fourth title. The record German champions are now playing the final for the third time in four years, having lost to Inter Milan in 2010 and Chelsea in 2012.
Dortmund’s only Champions League final appearance ended in glory in 1997, when they defeated Juventus.
