Munich beat Berlin to bid for Euro 2020 games

Munich was on Friday chosen over Berlin to bid for games at the Euro 2020 tournament which is to be played in 13 countries.

The board of the German football federation DFB made the decision at a meeting in Frankfurt.

“It wasn’t easy because we had two strong bidders in Munich and Berlin. We are convinced that we have a good chance to get a package for Euro 2020 with Munich,” DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach said.

The DFB can bid for two packages -- either three group stage games and a round of 16 or quarterfinal game; or the semifinals and final -- at the first Euro tournament spread across the continent.

However, Germany may only bid for the group game package if Istanbul fails to be elected hosts of the 2020 Olympics on September 7. In that case the city is favoured to be given the semifinals and final, and would be supported by the DFB.

The 13 host cities are to be decided upon by the ruling body UEFA in September 2014.
