Bernd Schuster is the new coach of Malaga, the Spanish Liga club said on Friday.

The 53-year-old German coach has been given a surprisingly long five-year contract by Malaga, whose previous coach Manuel Pellegrini is poised to join Premier League outfit Manchester City.

Schuster has been out of contract since leaving Turkish club Besiktas in 2011, and has not coached in Spain since being sacked by Real Madrid in 2008.

His assistant at Malaga will be former Switzerland midfielder Fabio Celestini, who played under Schuster at Getafe from 2005 to 2007.

Malaga reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League last season. They then finished sixth in La Liga but cannot participate in the Europa League because they have been suspended for one season from European competitions by UEFA because of financial misdemeanours.
