BENGALURU: Defender John Johnson will leave Bengaluru FC at the end of May when his contract expires, the club announced late on Sunday. That leaves Sunil Chhetri as the only player to be still at the club since its inception in 2013.

Over five seasons, Johnson, a fan favourite, was a big part of BFC’s success, being the defensive lynchpin under two managers — Ashley Westwood and Albert Roca. The 29-year-old won the I-League in 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons, the Federation Cup in 2015 and 2017 and the Super Cup last week.

“After five incredible years at an incredible club, my time has come to move on,” Johnson said on Instagram. “It’s not just been five years of great football, memories and trophies. It’s been five years of my life that I have to be grateful about.”

“I’ve had the good fortune of sharing this journey with so many top professionals and more importantly, fantastic human beings. Thank you for having me. I’m glad I could have you too.”

The Englishman is now being tipped to join two-time Indian Super League champion ATK.
