de Rossi handed three-game ban

November 13, 2012 11:09 pm | Updated 11:09 pm IST - Rome:

Roma international Daniele de Rossi has been suspended for three games following a red card received for punching an opponent during a game at the weekend, the Lega Serie A said on Monday.

A sports judge banned the midfielder for hitting Lazio captain Stefano Mauri in the face shortly before half-time of Sunday’s derby at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

The 2006 world champion was said to have apologised to Mauri after the game, which Lazio won 3-2.

He was sidelined for Italy’s friendly against France on Wednesday, in compliance with an ethical code introduced by selector Cesare Prandelli.

Mauri was also sent off late in the second half of the derby after a second booking and was banned for the big match that the Rome side plays next weekend at leader Juventus.

Both clubs were fined €8,000 because their fans set off smoke bombs and firecrackers at Stadio Olimpico.
