West Indies’ leading batsman Chris Gayle will be ready to play the World Cup quarterfinal against New Zealand on Saturday despite not training with his teammates on Wednesday, the team's allrounder Darren Sammy has said.

West Indies allrounder Darren Sammy says the team’s injured leading batsman, Chris Gayle, will be ready to play the World Cup quarterfinal against New Zealand on Saturday despite not training with his teammates on Wednesday.

Gayle missed the West Indies’ final pool match against the United Arab Emirates on Sunday and has undergone scans this week to determine the severity of his back injury. He has also received a cortisone injection.

But former captain Sammy said there was no doubt that Gayle will take his place in the West Indies’ lineup for Saturday’s match.

Sammy told reporters, “Chris is not missing this quarterfinal for anybody. He is more pumped up than we are. He’s been writing down the path for us and the different scenarios.”
