The Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted retired judge N.M. Kasliwal, the principal observer of the Rajasthan Cricket Association election, to declare the poll result on May 6.
The former IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, had contested the polls on December 19, 2013 for the post of president.
A Bench of Justices Anil R. Dave and Shiva Kirti Singh directed the apex court registry to send the results, filed in a sealed envelope, to Justice Kasliwal to declare the result. The Bench also said it was open to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, under its rules, suspending or disqualifying Mr. Modi, if he was declared elected.
The BCCI had moved the Supreme Court to restrain Mr. Modi from becoming the president of the RCA.
It argued that any association of Mr. Modi with the RCA would affect the image of the BCCI.
It also pointed out that Mr. Modi’s nomination was incorrect as the RCA had rejected the BCCI’s objections to his candidature.
