What is the key to success for a fast bowler — bowling fast or swinging the ball? “I think taking wickets is what matters. Whether you take wickets by bowling fast or swinging the ball is up to you,” said Irfan Pathan, who is expected to play a key role in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL campaign this season.
Irfan draws inspiration from the fact that the World’s No. 1 fast bowler Dale Steyn is 30 years old now. “So, at 29, I still can still dream big,” said the exuberant all-rounder.
“At every opportunity, I will try to be a better bowler than in my previous match. I may not be successful always but if I put in the effort, I believe my success rate can be as high as 90 percent.
“And consistency in a high-profile event like IPL should help my bid to return to the Indian squad,” Irfan added.
“The key to success is to stay fit and be consistent. And when one performs to one’s full potential, it also means that the team benefits. That gives an extra fillip to one’s motivation. I know the team looks to me to do well with both bat and ball,” he said.
Irfan feels it is a privilege to bowl alongside Steyn. “He is the No. 1 bowler right now in any format of the game and I am eager to pick up new tricks in the art of fast bowling from him,” said Irfan.
Looking back at his own career which has been dogged by injuries, Irfan said there was no point in feeling frustrated.
“If you get that feeling, you are finished. Ups and downs are common for sportspersons. Yes, injuries can be demoralising.
“But again, look at young fast bowlers like Pattinson and Cummins who suffered three major injuries in one year. Injuries don’t mean it is the end of the road. I believe the key is how well you manage your body and recover quickly,” he added.
He believes that the next two months could be the most crucial period for his comeback plans into the Indian team.
