Nair's confidence earns Delhi 6-wicket win

And Delhi Daredevils stay afloat to fight another day, after Karun Nair held his own on a day of hot and cold fielding, after Sunrisers set them 158.

Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the IPL match between Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Raipur.

Daredevils, in sixth place with 12 points, are playing this must-win game at their new home-ground, and have left themselves the daunting task of having to defeat the most consistent side of this tournament so far, the Sunrisers, who are right on top with 16 points.

-------------------------------------------------

And that was a match full of gaffes and gems from the fielders. One out-of-the-world catch by Barinder Sran to remove the dangerous Carlos Brathwaite — who, himself, was responsible earlier for one of the most athletic pieces of fielding seen in recent times — in the 19th over was not enough to make the difference for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Karun Nair was the man of the hour, who took up the challenge, and delivered in a crunch game in the most emphatic way, finishing it off with two nerveless boundaries. Delhi Daredevils threatened to get sucked into their pattern of playing out too many dots, but fortunately for them the target wasn't so big.

In the end, great result for Daredevils. Just the breath they needed to take at this stage, to stay alive to fight one more day.

David Warner is not a happy chappie, as indicates the blood-red hue of his face. And I do hope his wrist is ok from being slammed violently on the ground. Must have been devastating for him, after Mustafizur Rahman bowled that sparkling 19th over, to have lost because Nair's last two hits trickled past fielders.

---------------------------------------------------

DD 161/4 after 20 overs (K Nair 83 off 59 | S Samson 3 off 4 || win by 6 wickets)

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Right. The stage is set. If only Brathwaite were still around. Would have been a different sort of equation. But Nair is still here.

Sanju Samson gets two runs off the first, pulled to Square-leg. 9 needed from 5

A tight yorker ricochets off Samson's boot and they get a leg-bye. 8 needed from 4

Bhuvi second-guesses Nair, who is hanging back in his crease, by bowling it back-of-the-length. Single taken to Point. 7 needed from 3

Another yorker, and another leg-bye courtesy Samson's boot. 6 needed from 2.

And Nair has a four here; a great shot off the back-foot, slapping it awkwardly with a full flat face that rolls away to the Long-off boundary. 2 needed from 1

And that is that. Nair finishes it off with the same kind of style with which he has carried himself throughout this innings. Bunted through Mid-on, where Warner can't stifle it, and bashes his palm into the ground, red-faced and livid. And Nair exults on his way to his cheering teammates.

DD 148/3 after 19 overs (K Nair 74 off 56 | S Samson 1 off 1 || need 11 from 6 balls)

Mustafizur to try to make something happen before the final over. And he does! Brathwaite gone, courtesy an absurb blinder from Bariner Sran at Third-man to leap sideways like a panther and catch the thick-edge at Third-man. Woof, that was a catch and some. Probably made up for ALL the poor fielding and catching in this match. Just 5 runs. Trust the Fizz.

DD 143/3 after 18 overs (K Nair 70 off 53 | C Brathwaite 10 off 5 || need 16 from 12 balls)

Brathwaite slashes the first ball of Bhuvi's third over away to the Point boundary for four . Bhuvi is disoriented enough to bowl a wide and a leg-bye. When you're a giant, you can play shots off all parts of your body; this one rises up on Brathwaite's, clips his elbow, and runs away for four behind the wicket as Ojha simply stares.

DD 131/3 after 17 overs (K Nair 70 off 51 | C Brathwaite 1 off 1 || need 28 from 18 balls)

Oh and that absolves Bhuvi from his spill the previous over as Warner now pouches Duminy, flinging it the ball down angrily, after Sran induces a miscue with a slower delivery.

Guess whom that brings out. Wait, don't hold your breath. It's Brathwaite.

But it's Nair who's doing the six -hitting as he latches on to Sran straying down leg-side and just lifts it over Square-leg. Brathwaite survives a sharp run-out attempt and Nair absolutely sends one hurtling into space over Midwicket for another six . And now, Delhi should not lose this from here.

DD 117/3 after 16 overs (K Nair 57 off 47 | JP Duminy 17 off 14 || need 42 from 24 balls)

Now, that's one way to negotiate the Fizz. Move around so jerkily in your crease that you confuse him into bowling a wide, as Nair has discovered and applied. And next ball, he scoops the Fizz over Short Fine-leg for four . And one more catch dropped! This time, Bhuvaneshwar has spilled Duminy after he slices a step-out drive in the air to Mid-off. Sunrisers are spilling catches like customers of their franchise spill their morning coffee.

DD 107/2 after 15 overs (K Nair 52 off 44 | JP Duminy 13 off 11 || need 52 from 30 balls)

Oh! So unlucky for Sran, as Warner drops the simplest of catches running in at Long-on after Nair had miscued his swat shot to a short and wide delivery. Is that going to be a defining moment in the game for Delhi? Because look what's happening to the Required Run-rate in the meantime... It's over 10 an over now! Of course, Brathwaite is still in the ranks...

DD 103/2 after 14 overs (K Nair 50 off 42 | JP Duminy 11 off 7 || need 56 from 36 balls)

Now, Duminy breaks the shackles and Warner's desperate dive at the Mid-wicket boundary as he sweeps Karn Sharma away with power, for four . And Nair gets his fifty with a single. Great knock by, once again, the single confident batsmen in the Delhi unit so far.

DD 92/2 after 13 overs (K Nair 48 off 40 | JP Duminy 2 off 3 || need 67 from 42 balls)

Hooda is back in. And looking to get Delhi's run-rate up by the looks of it. Half-trackers, flat deliveries, width, everything on offer. But Duminy and Nair unable to get that boundary, until a wide full-toss is now served up and Nair can't help but clobber it to Midwicket for four .

DD 83/2 after 12 overs (K Nair 41 off 36 | JP Duminy 0 off 1 || need 76 from 48 balls)

Rishabh Pant gets a half-tracker and doesn't spare it, smashing it away through to the Midwicket fence for four . But now, Pant is gone run-out as a throw flies in from way over at Deep Square-leg and crashes into the non-strikers' stumps before Pant can pant into the crease.

DD 75/1 after 11 overs (K Nair 32 off 28 | R Pant 26 off 23 || need 84 from 54 balls)

Yuvraj Singh into the attack. Nice loopy deliveries on offer. The two batsmen need to get the big ones off part-timers like Yuvraj. It won't do just to knock him around for singles. 9.33 runs per over required from here on.

DD 68/1 after 10 overs (K Nair 32 off 28 | R Pant 26 off 23 || need 91 from 60 balls)

Karn Sharma comes into the attack here. Just 6 runs. And the Required Run-rate has climbed above 9-per-over.

Hear, hear.

DD 62/1 after 9 overs (K Nair 30 off 26 | R Pant 22 off 19 || need 97 from 66 balls)

Henriques creates a close call by cramping Nair up as he tried to glance it away to Third-man, but the ball emerged in Ojha's gloves. No amount of appealing would convince the umpire there was an edge, though. Snickometer shows some wave activity though. The next ball, however, is a violent pull that transports the ball over Square-leg for six .

DD 52/1 after 8 overs (K Nair 22 off 22 | R Pant 20 off 17 || need 107 from 72 balls)

Deepak Hooda to bowl now. NO boundaries even though he bowls some terrible deliveries — a long-hop, a ball that sat up outside off. But the batsmen just unable to get them away, oddly enough.

DD 45/1 after 7 overs (K Nair 19 off 19 | R Pant 16 off 14 || need 114 from 78 balls)

Pant turns a four runs into 8 by stepping down the track and giving Henriques some elevation over Mid-off for a four .

DD 37/1 after 6 overs (K Nair 18 off 18 | R Pant 9 off 9 || need 122 from 84 balls)

Mustafizur bowls an over full of cutters and slower ones and varied lengths and gives away just the 1 run. DD are in danger of falling into their dot-balls trap.

DD 36/1 after 5 overs (K Nair 18 off 13 | R Pant 8 off 8)

Sran's second over is as bad as his first over was brilliant. While de Kock struggled against his lengths, Nair is confident enough to steer it away for four through Point, then bash it to the Midwicket fence for another four and then, as Sran loses the plot and bowls it really full and really wide, Nair places it beautifully into a gap in the Covers, through which it goes for another four .

DD 22/1 after 4 overs (K Nair 6 off 8 | R Pant 7 off 7)

And now it's the Fizz. Mustafizur begins with a beautiful leg-cutter that skims the air on top of Pant's off-stump. And Pant has to wait for four more awesome deliveries before he gets a couple of short-wide ones, the second of which he is able to punch away to the Point boundary for four . 8 runs off it.

DD 14/1 after 3 overs (K Nair 5 off 7 | R Pant 1 off 2)

Karun Nair played that entire over from Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Got the one four swatting a rare flat delivery through Mid-wicket, but Kumar's lines and swing were near impossible to play away that over. Delhi have to guard against their tendency to play out long periods with low scoring rates. That's just the kind of vice that can magnify a mediocre target like 159.

DD 10/1 after 2 overs (K Nair 1 off 1 | R Pant 1 off 2)

And de Kock's (2 from 9) middling run of form is continuing today. He misses a drive, a flick, and then thin-edges it to Naman Ojha behind the wicket. Very sad display of batting by the talented opener. Beautiful over by Barinder Sran.

DD 8/0 after 1 over (Q de Kock 2 off 6 | R Pant 0 off 0)

And now that the break is done and dusted, we can see if Delhi Daredevils can chase down 159 easily or if it will turn out to be one of those tricky targets.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar isn't helping matters by starting with 5 wides . And following it up with another wide. The rest of the over is just a bit of a snoozefest with the batsmen wary of the movement Bhuvi is getting.

---------------------------------------------

And that was an odd sort of innings. David Warner was quite the master of the Run-Rate while he was out there, but after he fell in the 16th over, there was a lag in the scoring tide. And Zaheer Khan would have preferred the 19th over to have gone a little differently and not messed his figures, which were quite brilliant today, up.

SRH 158/6 after 20 overs (B Kumar 5 off 2 | N Ojha 15 off 13)

What a smooth shot from the number 8 batsman to begin the final over, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has lofted it beautifully over Extra Cover for four . But no more boundaries are forthcoming (how old is Zaheer Khan again, the man who is flinging himself around on the field to save precious runs?) and Sunrisers finish two short of 160 and lose Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (13 from 7) run-out on the final ball.

SRH 149/6 after 19 overs (B Kumar 5 off 2 | N Ojha 15 off 13)

Ok, now Naman wants to get on the attack, as he positions himself well and pulls Zaheer through Square-leg for a six . And now, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has swatted it for a one-bounce four . Zaheer has gone for 14 runs this over. Unlike him to be this expensive at this stage.

SRH 135/6 after 18 overs (B Kumar 0 off 0 | N Ojha 6 off 9)

Ok. So, Morgan is going to make use of his lives. He takes the slightest of steps away to the leg-side and clatters Coulter-Nile over the Long-on fence for six . But Morgan isn't able to replicate the shot off a short delivery. He tries to pull it but has sliced it into Brathwaite's hands at Long-on.

SRH 124/5 after 17 overs (E Morgan 6 off 7 | N Ojha 4 off 6)

Oh no. Zaheer isn't happy at all, as Morgan chips his slower delivery to Short Cover, where the fielder dives but cannot hold on to the catch. And Morgan really is living dangerously here, as he moves across his stumps, misses the ball, and the ball too just misses the wicket. De Kock has his hand on his head. Looking like around 150-160 here, right? You wouldn't think it given the entertainment Warner gave us.

SRH 120/5 after 16 overs (E Morgan 4 off 4 | N Ojha 2 off 3)

And Brathwaite is the man in action once again, and he has got the big fish — Warner (73 from 56) himself. He has slashed a short and wide ball away over down Third-man's throat.

SRH 115/4 after 15 overs (E Morgan 2 off 3 | D Warner 71 off 54)

Warner can afford to really let his hair down — ok, his short crop down — now. But Mishra has bowled a weird over, in which none of the flat deliveries were converted into boundaries. Just 7 runs, all on foot.

SRH 108/4 after 14 overs (E Morgan 1 off 1 | D Warner 66 off 50)

JP Duminy comes into the attack now. Henriques latches onto his easy pace and slog-sweeps him away through Mid-wicket for four . And this is the end of Henriques (18 from 13), a couple of balls later, he goes for the slog-sweep again, this time finer, but can't make good enough contact to clear the outstretched palms of the Deep-Midwicket fielder.

SRH 99/3 after 13 overs (M Henriques 12 off 10 | D Warner 64 off 48)

Every time Yadav flattens his length, he is smacked away, like clockwork. And yet, like clockwork, he persists with it. And this time, it's Warner who has rocked backwards, and bashed it away for four through Midwicket.

SRH 91/3 after 12 overs (M Henriques 11 off 9 | D Warner 57 off 43)

David Warner has got yet another fifty. What a performer. He has now stooped to his knees to Brathwaite. Not in humility, though. In sheer arrogance, all the better to wallop him over Long-on for an immense six . Next up, as Brathwaite flattens his length, he is pulled away for four by Henriques. 13 runs that over.

SRH 78/3 after 11 overs (M Henriques 6 off 7 | D Warner 49 off 39)

Warner is such a rare mix of brute power and subtle craftiness. He changes grip for a switch-hit, Mishra chucks it hard and Warner simply helps it along over Third-man's head for four .

SRH 68/3 after 10 overs (M Henriques 1 off 3 | D Warner 44 off 37)

Brathwaite has punched his card in once again. This time, hopping across the return crease to deliver a searing full ball at an angle, and forcing Yuvraj Singh (10 from 11) to rattle an inside-edge back onto his woodwork.

SRH 63/2 after 9 overs (Y Singh 10 off 10 | D Warner 41 off 35)

Nice shot! Yuvraj plays the most graceful of late-cuts to send Jayant Yadav to the Third-man fence for four . Yadav is bowling that short and flat arm-ball once too often. It's not a variation if you keep doing it.

SRH 53/2 after 8 overs (Y Singh 2 off 6 | D Warner 39 off 33)

Yuvraj is always a tentative customer at the start of his innings. And Coulter-Nile isn't making it easy for him to settle in, bowling in tough areas and getting the ball to rise awkwardly into the left-hander's body. Just 3 runs.

SRH 50/2 after 7 overs (Y Singh 1 off 1 | D Warner 38 off 32)

Okay, what is going on here? Now, Amit Mishra comes in and effects a run-out of his own bowling. And suddenly, it's two down as Warner plays it back to the bowler, and as the ball trickles to Short Cover, Hooda (1 from 1) begins on a non-existent run, and can't turn back in time before Mishra rushes to grab the ball and throw the stumps down with a direct hit. Yuvi is out in the middle now.

SRH 46/1 after 6 overs (D Hooda 0 off 0 | D Warner 36 off 28)

And Carlos Brathwaite comes in for the final over of the Powerplay. Bowling tight lines with variations. Oh! Warner has hammered it at Brathwaite, and it ricochets off his hand. But no matter, a couple balls later, the big burly West Indian skids away towards Short-midwicket on his follow-through to stop Dhawan's on-drive, rises and, all in one flash, fires it into the striker's stumps as Dhawan (10 from 8) is run-out, looking like a rabbit with horribly slow reflexes. Brilliant athleticism from the big man.

SRH 42/0 after 5 overs (S Dhawan 9 off 6 | D Warner 33 off 24)

Warner, Warner, Warner. What's do you eat for breakfast? He has just tapped Jayant Yadav away on the on-side, but the ball races away for four . And then he lofts it over Mid-on for another four .

SRH 32/0 after 4 overs (S Dhawan 9 off 6 | D Warner 23 off 18)

Nathan Coulter-Nile comes in and is taken for 15 runs via three airborne fours . Dhawan flays the first one first ball over Point's head, then Warner bunts it down over Short-Cover and then Dhawan pushes one past the Short Fine-leg fielder, who couldn't reach the catch.

SRH 17/0 after 3 overs (S Dhawan 5 off 5 | D Warner 12 off 13)

Dhawan now unhinges his grip and slices Zaheer away for a lofted four through Cover. But Zaheer comes back with some class bowling, troubling the batsmen with that off-stump line, full deliveries that turn into awkward inside-edges and a shooting yorker that thuds into Dhawan's tripped-up legs juuust outside leg-stump.

SRH 10/0 after 2 overs (S Dhawan 0 off 2 | D Warner 10 off 10)

Jayant Yadav, the newb, comes in with some off-break up his long sleeve. Ooh, there looks to be some turn on this track too. But David Warner is picking him off here. Despatches him for two fours , the first cut away through Gully and the next driven powerfully through the Covers.

SRH 1/0 after 1 over (S Dhawan 0 off 2 | D Warner 1 off 4)

Zaheer Khan has begun with an exquisite over in which he got movement of the deck, through the air, rise off the pitch, and a smile on his face. Just the one run and made Shikhar Dhawan look look quite awkward.
