A triple jumper who said her only legal jump here was a terrible one, emerged as the outstanding athlete of the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday night.
Jamaican Trecia Smith, who won the women's gold with her lone legal effort, was presented the David Dixon Award by the Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell, given to the outstanding athlete of the Games.
“I'm very happy to win the gold but it was still a terrible jump,” the 34-year-old 2005 World champion had said.Smith was a good netballer in school but her talent for the jumps was spotted during an inter-house competition. She has a personal best of 15.16 in triple jump.
Australian swimmer Alicia Coutts, who came to Delhi as a relatively unknown swimmer but went home as the golden girl with five golds, had been a favourite for the award, named after the former CGF secretary, but the verdict came as a surprise.
