The athletics events got off to a start in the 34th Jharkhand National Games, at the Birsa Munda Stadium, here on Wednesday.

Mayookha Johny emerged triumphant in long jump with a leap of 6.26m in her fourth attempt. Shradha Ghule of Maharashtra finished second with a jump of 6.15 while Piyali Paul of West Bengal was third.

Mayookha had a foul in the fifth and took a calculated gamble to skip the final round as she was confident of pocketing the gold. Shradha failed to make a mark in both her fourth and fifth attempts and landed at 6.08m on her last try.

Piyali, with a last round jump of 5.91m, denied Resmi Bose of Kerala, who had been assured of a medal till such stage.

“I was happy with the jump, my landing could have been better. This being off-season, I was not too worried,” said Mayookha, whose personal best is a 6.64m, set last year in the All-Star meet in Delhi.

Last year's National champion Saurabh Vij, who started with a foul in his first attempt in the men's shot put, went on to win the gold with his fifth round throw of 18.90m.

Om Prakash second

The reigning Asian champion, Om Prakash from Haryana, could not go beyond 18.13m and the bronze went to Punjab's Jagroop Singh, who tossed the iron ball to 18m.
