Golden girl: Manpreet Kaur’s gold-winning effort of 18.86m was far beyond the World Championships entry standard of 17.75m.

A couple of years ago, she said that going past 19m was no big deal. Shot putter Manpreet Kaur is now very close to that goal, with her stunning season-opener of 18.86m at the Asian Grand Prix in China on Monday.

The Olympian also took a sensational move in the world list, moving to the top of the pack. Behind her, with 18.54m, in the IAAF list is Michelle Carter, the American who won her country’s first-ever Olympic gold in the shot put in Rio last year.

Manpreet, who was one of the early birds to qualify for Rio, however, had a disappointing Olympics, finishing 13th in her qualifying group with 17.06m.

The 26-year-old has surprised many with some big throws, one just hopes she stays consistent and pulls off a big one at the coming Asians and the Worlds.
