As many as 70 teachers from 45 schools took part in a one-day programme on preservation of bio-diversity and water body restoration, organised by TREE Foundation at Anna University. The objective of the conference was to enable high school teachers to integrate environmental education into curricula so that students are prepared to be a part of environmental solutions.
Teachers expressed that students should be taught about issues such as waste management, protection of water bodies, conserving wildlife, reduction in the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and importance of growing trees.
The programme focussed on formation of eco-groups in schools, environmental education, biodiversity projects, environmental awareness camps and others. A documentary titled ‘Why Care About Turtles?” was screened.
On the occasion, Ambujam, Director, Institute of Ocean Management and Water Resources Managenent, Anna University, said that the department would offer the necessary expertise for the institutions that come forward in adopting and restoring ecosystems. Later, she gave certificates to the participants.
