Talk on wealth and welfare in the IT sector
Renowned economist and professor at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, C.P. Chandrashekar will speak on ‘Wealth and welfare: an IT industry perspective’ on Sunday.
Organised by the ITEC (IT and ITES Employees Centre), a welfare and support organisation for workers in the IT sector, the talk is part of a discussion on the IT sector and how it relates to the socioeconomic and political ecosystem. The event, which is slated to commence at 2 p.m., is being held at the K.H. Patil Auditorium on K.H. Road (near Richmond flyover). It is co-organised by Darsana, an engineers’ alumni organisation.
The event aims at initiating an “unbiased and open discussion on the underlying dynamics of the IT industry” and would deal with topics ranging from the relationship between the political system and the economics of the IT industry, the social returns our society derives from the IT industry, and the work nature and labour relationships, a press release from ITEC stated. Debates would also discuss the global dynamics of outsourcing.

Incubation programme for cloud start-ups
Microsoft announced the final list of 11 select technology start-ups to be incubated at the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure in Bangalore. These budding start-ups were chosen from 200 applicants and include exciting ideas across e-commerce, healthcare, education, digital media, enterprise, cloud infrastructure and mobile, a release from the tech major stated.
As part of this programme, the start-ups would be put through a four-month “deep immersion programme” under the guidance of mentors from Microsoft and the industry. The 11 companies are amplyfy.me, Caeruz Ventures, CipherGraph, CloudInfra, Gameizon, HireRabbit, Nowfloats, Plustxt, Sparsha Learning, Whitesharkk and WorldWithoutMe.
Amit Chatterjee, Managing Director, Microsoft India (R&D), said: “The programme has over 60 mentors — including senior technical leaders from Microsoft and influential business leaders, venture capitalists and angel investors from the industry who have volunteered to guide the start-ups through their journey of building successful companies,” Amit added.
Location-based interest network launched
Bangalore-based enterprise Treetle launched an online platform for individuals who share common interests, activities or hobbies to connect and share experiences, here this week. The company claims it is India’s first online location-based interest network, and that it addresses what it perceives as an “increasing need to engage with people outside the virtual world, pursue interests and lead a more fulfilling life”.
Its Beta version, launched three months ago in Bangalore, already has over 70 clubs that have been set up across several interest groups, including biking, flying, animal care and music, with very active members who regularly meet offline for their club events, a release from the company stated.
Treetle is now available in over 3,400 cities in India.

Networking major Cisco announced that its Networking Academy (NetAcad) Programme had been conferred the prestigious World Education Summit Award 2012 for the best innovation in global collaborative learning in the higher education space in India.
The nominated projects were screened and posted online for the public to vote via social media platforms, a release from Cisco stated. NetAcad was chosen through a nationwide public poll as well as a 13-member jury comprising distinguished academicians and bureaucrats.
