HTC, the Taiwanese company that has scored a big success with its Android smartphones, on Tuesday unveiled plans for a 7-inch tablet computer.

HTC set out details of the HTC Flyer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the trade’s main annual expo.

The device is to have an aluminium case and will be available worldwide from the second quarter of this year, HTC said.

The device will not be loaded with Google’s Android 3.0 operating system, which has been especially adapted for tablet computers.

Instead, it will use the earlier Android 2.4 platform. HTC did not disclose the planned price.

Mobile computing is now the fastest-changing area of the digital industry, with buyers having to frequently replace their phones if they are to keep up with the technology.

HTC is a world leader in both Android — and Microsoft Windows mobile-based phones.

The company aims to sell 8.5 million smartphones of both types in the first quarter of the year.
