Habitat loss and the non-availability of feed have pushed the population of many a bird species to the brink of extinction. Now, one more threat has been added to the list — kite flying thread made in China. The thread is made of glass nylon yarn with an abrasive coast of crushed glass, and is razor sharp.

Mohammed Dilawar of Nature Forever, a Nashik-based conservation organisation, has started a campaign against the sale of the Chinese kite flying thread. Mr. Dilawar said several thousand birds died every year during the kite festival organised in Gujarat, Maharashtra and in a few other north Indian States. But, most of the time the reports were not recorded.
