This refers to a group of 17 wild monkeys from the Philippines that were found to be subjected to unacceptable treatment for the purpose of a scientific experiment carried out in Silver Spring, Maryland. The monkeys were used by American neuroscientist Edward Taub, who hoped to study the brain’s ability to reshape itself after damage. The experiment was exposed by Alex Pacheco, a co-founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and caused outrage regarding the treatment of animals by scientists.
