Well deserved

I am 80-plus and a reader of The Hindu for 60 years. I fully agree with the views expressed by Khushwant Singh, doyen of the literary world (Oct. 19). I read two English newspapers every day — one published from the south and the other from the north — but I find The Hindu a cut above the other in the presentation of news and views. It maintains a very high standard of English. I assure Mr. Singh that thousands of readers endorse his opinion.

Millions across the globe will second what Mr. Singh has said about The Hindu . I started reading the newspaper ever since I started learning English and have become an addict. It is a compendium. I know a friend who got through his UPSC examinations with flying colours by just reading The Hindu .

That The Hindu has maintained its high journalistic standards and exemplary social commitment even in the days when the media are in the vicious grip of commercial compulsions and are increasingly succumbing to corporate coercion is amazing.

As an ardent reader of The Hindu , I thank the newspaper for providing quality news. The eminent English writer and columnist's letter appreciating the editor and the staff of The Hindu is one more feather in its cap. It truly deserves the praise. I, for one, have learnt more English by reading The Hindu than by attending years of classes. Hats off to the newspaper for its quality and genuineness!

I was thrilled to see Mr. Singh's letter. It is a great honour for The Hindu to get such a rich compliment from a journalist of his stature.

The letter from the grand old journalist, editor of weeklies and major newspapers, and author is a matter of great pride. It is akin to sage Vashishta conferring the title of Brahmarishi .

The Hindu stands apart in its reporting and scrupulously adheres to objective reporting. This makes it more readable. The average time spent by me on reading a newspaper has increased by 100 per cent, thanks to The Hindu .

I am a student of class IX. I was delighted to read the letter of the eminent journalist and writer, Khushwant Singh, in praise of The Hindu . Since last year, I have been reading the letters regularly. I also read the Young World regularly. Although I started reading the letters because of pressure from my father, I have started cherishing them. Mr. Singh's letter is inspiring for not only the regular readers of The Hindu but also students like me.

The Hindu has the unique distinction of publishing readers' letters in large numbers. It publishes at least a dozen views of its readers, which no other newspaper does. The articles and interviews of eminent personalities are elaborate and the readers get a vivid picture of occurrences around the world. Congratulations to the newspaper on maintaining its uniqueness from its glorious past.

R. Nandakumar,Bangalore

Coming as it does from a legend in journalism, the letter is a crowning glory for The Hindu . Kudos to the Editor-in-Chief, N. Ram, and his dedicated team. There can be no second opinion about the excellence of the newspaper. Hundreds of my letters have been published in these columns over the past four decades, which I consider the greatest honour. This sentiment bears testimony to the standard, prestige and image of the newspaper.

I was pleasantly surprised on reading the letter from Khushwant Singh, showering praise on The Hindu and picking it as “the most readable daily in the world.” The newspaper has been my companion for years. Not a day is complete without reading it fully. My bonding with The Hindu became stronger after my letters started getting published in this column. I take pride in saying that I improved my writing skill a lot, reading this newspaper.

R. Sivakumar,Chennai

I was inspired to write this after I read Mr. Singh's letter. There are many readers who don't take their morning coffee without reading The Hindu . My family has been subscribing to the newspaper for 100 years now.

Although my umpteen letters addressed to this column on various issues have gone unpublished, I have never lost interest in expressing my opinion. I continue to write. Many have followed my advice to buy The Hindu .
