Writer U.R. Ananthamurthy’s observation that Mr. Modi is a bully is unwarranted and unjustified. India wants a change — and not just for the sake of change. The Congress-led UPA 2 government has failed on all fronts. Prices of essential commodities have spiralled, the economic growth rate is down, unemployment has increased, communal conflicts have risen and corruption is unprecedented. India needs an alternative.

There is no doubt that in a democracy, everyone has the right to express his or her views. But Mr. Ananthamurthy should know the mood of the nation, particularly the youth who are supporting Mr. Modi for the top post.
The Jnanpith award winner should accept the mandate given to Mr. Modi by the people of Gujarat. Mr. Modi is a mass leader which is why the BJP is projecting him as its prime ministerial candidate.

True, Mr. Ananthamurthy and Professor Amartya Sen cannot, by themselves, determine who will be India’s Prime Minister (Letters, Sept. 21). But the two are important people and their opinions matter. As individual citizens, they have every right to voice their opinions. It is unfair to criticise them for exercising their democratic right.
