Unfortunate

That the PDP, main Opposition party in Kashmir, stayed away from the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss the volatile situation and resolve the quagmire, is a sad commentary on the state of affairs prevailing in the State. All political parties must work together to ensure that there is no further deterioration. It is peace that suffers when the security forces display an arrogant and reckless attitude and the main Opposition shows indifference.

Much to the chagrin of all concerned, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti rejected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's appeal to attend the all-party meeting. Her attitude of finding fault with the Omar Abdullah government at a time when she should have joined hands with it to end the cycle of violence in the Kashmir Valley is unfortunate. This is not the time to indulge in politicking. The State is on the boil. The army has been deployed. All stakeholders should do their best to prevent the separatist forces from fishing in troubled waters.
