The reported appeal by Minister of External Affairs S.M. Krishna to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop further release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu is unfortunate.
That he made such an appeal despite being a Central Minister — that too while on an official mission in the U.S. — speaks volumes about his chauvinism.

Coming as it does from a Cabinet Minister striving for friendly relations with all countries, particularly difficult neighbours like Pakistan and China, Mr. Krishna’s appeal to Dr. Singh is most unfortunate. A leader of his calibre indulging in such narrow parochial politics is shocking. In this context, one must appreciate the restraint being exercised by Union Ministers belonging to Tamil Nadu — the most affected riparian State. Mr. Krishna has behaved like a leader of a regional party.
