Typhoon toll

November 12, 2013 01:30 am | Updated 01:30 am IST

The calamity of epic proportions that struck the central Philippines and Vietnam in the form of super typhoon Haiyan is unfortunate, to say the least (International, Nov.11).

The trail of death and destruction left behind once again brings to the fore man’s utter helplessness in the face of nature’s fury. It is also a reminder of how India escaped disaster during cyclone Phailin thanks to early warnings and the role of science and technology. Our hearts go out to the storm-affected people of the Philippines and Vietnam who have suffered immeasurably. India and the international community would do well to rise to the occasion by rushing food and aid to those affected.
