With increasing literacy and urbanisation, new media has come to stay (“The timeline warriors,” March 20). To the young and upper class urban audiences, social media does play a role in influencing their political choices. Its future lies in it being developed as a forum for debate and discussion.

Modernity has the ability to either destroy or modify anything which comes in its way. As a result, political parties have also donned the robe of modernity to reap its advantages. While social media will emerge a gamechanger in Election 2014, by extending the ground for campaigning by political parties, one must not gloss over the fact that it has failed to influence public opinion in a healthy way and strengthen democracy. Its objective should be to create an educated voter and not merely an aware voter.
