The Rajini factor

What does Mr. Rajinikanth really want? Is he interested in becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the shortest span of time? There are a few clues. Using his mass popularity, he could be wanting to offer himself as a mediator in merging the factions of the AIADMK. After achieving this, he then takes membership of the party and contest for the post of General Secretary. On winning, probably unopposed, he contests the R.K. Nagar by-election, where victory could be a cakewalk. His ascent to the throne follows. Alternatively, he could be building castles in the air if he takes the battle route where ‘foxes tread and even god shall find it difficult to fulfil his desire’ (“Wait for battle, Rajini tells fans”, May 20)..

If Mr. Rajinikant feels that the system has failed and is deeply concerned about the welfare people of Tamil Nadu, I am sure that many of us would wish to see him do these right away: demand that Tamil Nadu get its due and rightful share of Cauvery water with no further delay from Karnataka; condemn the double speak of the major political parties in the two States on the Cauvery issue; raise his voice for quick implementation of total prohibition; insist that the government hold back conducting NEET in the State for the next two years; speak out against any attempts to impose Hindi; demand that the Centre immediately release a drought relief package with complete waiver of farmer loans; request film-makers to stop showing women as mere objects and drop scenes that glorify violence against women; condemn social evils such as honour killings and caste discrimination; speak out against ‘cash for votes’ and black money; call for the appointment immediately of a Lok Ayuktha; demand prevention of and strict action against illegal sand mining and land encroachment; improve water and disaster management, desilt lakes and protect water bodies and also condemn the atrocities against Sri Lankan Tamils in 2009 and the continuing attacks on and arrests of our fishermen by Sri Lanka. We are keen to elicit his views on a number of relevant issues which are affecting the people of Tamil Nadu.
