The Lord's win

It is heartening that India has won, lording it over England, and at the home of cricket, Lord’s! The team worked like a well-oiled machine.

India’s victory brings to memory the contrasting performance of the Ajit Wadekar team in 1974. India lost the Test by an innings and 285 runs. With India out for 42 runs, the match was over in just over an hour. I was the PTI correspondent in London and I got two press gallery passes for the match. While getting ready to watch the match with my wife, I was shocked to find that it had ended. I still remember the cartoon in a British tabloid, of a woman waiting outside a men’s washroom. As her husband emerged, she exclaimed, “I told you not to go. The match is over.” That, I think, aptly summed up India’s humiliation.

The last wicket run out in England’s second innings highlighted the importance of the alacrity in fielding.

We should create another category of achievement in the bowling analysis for fielders to encourage them to perform better as run outs too play an important role in deciding the destiny of matches.
