Second year and policy

Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agile political phase of reaching out to the rest of the world and redefining the image of our country is laudable, one has to look at it in terms of the turn of events globally (“On realism of the second year”, April 23). In some instances, an all-party discussion would have helped in moulding and strengthening India’s stand on bilateral relationships.

Although it can argued that within his two-year tenure Mr. Modi hasn’t done too well, the fact that he has been enthusiastic in his approach to foreign policy is appreciable. Even though India and the United States have agreed “in principle” on a logistics support agreement that would make it easier for both militaries to share each other’s facilities, there is no denying that the India-U.S. relationship is at a different level than it was earlier. Moving from a policy of non-alignment, to a bear hug with Russia and then reactivating ties with the U.S., foreign policy, especially under Mr. Modi, needs to be built carefully.
