The alarming number of Right to Information appeals pending with the Central Information Commission is disturbing (“ >With no CIC, RTI appeals pile up ”, Nov.25). The very purpose of the Act will be defeated if the functioning of the Commission is not brought up to speed. The BJP government must take steps to appoint a Chief Information Commissioner, the post having been vacant since August, in order to clear the mammoth backlog of cases.

The situation has arisen as there is no recognised Leader of the Opposition. Politics should not come in the way of people’s rights. It will defeat the very purpose of the introduction of the RTI Act 2005 and empowering people with the right to question and to know. The government should not incur the wrath of the people.
