Roads to safety

January 25, 2018 11:42 pm | Updated 11:42 pm IST

Accidents cannot be attributed solely to rash driving, easy procurement of licences, poor penalties, and so on (“Making our roads safe”, Jan. 25). An important point that the writer has left out is the condition of roads — India’s roads are unfit for both driving and walking. When roads are re-laid, for instance, the sides are at a lower level, and this gives scope for skidding.

The problem lies in the mindset of road-users. Despite awareness campaigns on road safety being conducted by different organisations along with the traffic police, accidents are on the rise. Unless road-users follow rules and think of their own lives as precious, no stringent licensing system or hefty fines will prevent accidents.
