River & icon of culture

The special issue, “Celebrating the Cauvery” (Friday Review, September 8), with articles on the Cauvery and its related history, was enchanting. It gave the reader a feeling of flowing with the majestic river. Articles such as these should be shared with students in educational institutions so that they can develop increased awareness about the environment, the need to conserve nature and also understand our deep culture. Such articles should also serve as a lesson to those who are bent on polluting rivers, politicking in the name of water rights and also blocking their flow by constructing dams, when there are other means of generating power, storing water and controlling floods.
