Rahul’s return

April 18, 2015 12:06 am | Updated 12:06 am IST

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi may have brought his nearly two-month-long mysterious “ >soul-searching sabbatical ” to an end, and with his tottering party hoping in turn that the re-energised young man will now lead the party with greater vigour and skills (April 17). While the issues pending before the Congress will have to be decided by the mother and son team, one thing is certain. In Rahul’s absence, Sonia Gandhi has shown that she can still galvanise political forces against the Modi government. The way she led the march to Rashtrapati Bhavan against the Land Acquisition ordinance and also rallied round former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when Coalgate cropped up again shows that Rahul has much to learn.

What is the Congress celebrating for? It is Sonia Gandhi who is the real face of the Congress and capable of cobbling together a credible front that can take on the BJP-led NDA government, now on shaky ground because of acts against the minorities and anti-farmer policies. If Rahul’s loyalists try to impose his leadership on the party, one can be certain of deep trouble.
