Quite a pinch

In the past, teachers used to win over their students and command their respect with their eloquence, efficiency, love and affection without sacrificing discipline. Today, the picture has changed completely (“Pinching costs teacher Rs.50,000,” some editions, Oct. 31) There are some teachers who resort to violent methods of demanding respect by subjecting students to extreme forms of punishment. Parents too are to blame for putting the teaching community under pressure. The judgment by the Madras High Court, in this case that happened seven years ago, will send out a strong message to all teachers who are crude in their behaviour towards students.
