The Editorial, “ >Disinvestment takes off ” (Sept. 16), was timely. Jawaharlal Nehru viewed public sector units as playing an important role in the nation’s development. It was not only about their commercial value but also about their social gains. The present government’s policy of using PSUs as a potential source to mobilise funds to cover up fiscal deficit is short-sighted. Instead, the government should invest more in PSUs and make the best use of them to reap a better harvest in terms of dividends, employment, service and cost benefits. Disinvestment is nothing but killing the goose that lays the golden eggs; a blatant attempt to remove all vestiges of the remaining socialist symbols.
