Princess-activist

The review of the book on Sophia, granddaughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, prompts me to write this letter (‘Book Review’ – “The princess turned activist”, April 19). The details about her life such as her being active in the sociopolitical arena in England, her struggles to ensure the rehabilitation of Indian Laskars and her taking up the cause of suffrage for women in her country of birth raises many questions, prime among them being why did Sophia not get any recognition in India? How was an illustrious heroine struggling in England allowed to remain in oblivion by our freedom fighters and politicians? Isn’t she a person fit for recognition by India?
