Is a Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue (“ >Green clearances ignored for Patel statue project: activists ”, April 19) the need of the hour? When the monolithic leader stands tall in India’s history, spending crores of money on his statue does not augur well with the ‘nation first’ policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Green Bench might have some issues with the environmental clearances for the statue, but the ‘People’s Bench’ — the ultimate strength of democracy — is by and large definitely not interested in having our coffers drained to erect a statue that is not representative of a personality who towers above us all even otherwise.
