Parallel economy

This refers to the Editorial, “Dark truths about money” (Aug. 7), on the generation of black money through four major avenues. The growth of the parallel economy is akin to the growth of weeds in paddyfields. These are removed from arable lands and burnt. Black money cannot be eradicated unless the culprits are given exemplary punishment. The people’s mentality should also change, in the interest of the nation.

K. Chellappan,

Chennai

It is quite appalling to learn that even the diversion of subsidised kerosene to the open market contributes to money laundering, and forms a significant component of the parallel economy. The Modi government should give teeth to its plan to unearth black money and address the issue seriously.

K. Udaykiran,

Secunderabad

The fact that the size of the parallel economy is nearly three-fourths of the GDP is shocking. More shocking is the use of the education sector to divert funds.
