For a nation where the assassination of a former Prime Minister had to be entrusted to the U.N. for investigation, the latest demonstration of legal punctiliousness in asking Indian magistrates to testify (April 26) appears strange indeed. No Indian magistrate or, for that matter, any foreign national who values his life, will be foolish enough to travel to Pakistan and testify before a local court. Pakistan's audacity of asking for the custody of Ajmal Kasab has betrayed its intention of shifting the responsibility of punishing the terror plotters to India. When the mastermind of 26/11 has been allowed to roam free spewing venom on India, the call for a Pakistani trial is nothing but a travesty of justice.

In demanding the custody of Kasab, Pakistan has once again displayed its recalcitrant attitude to settling bilateral disputes in the subcontinent. While steadfastly refusing to extradite Dawood Ibrahim, it wants India to hand over the only terrorist captured alive during the attack on Mumbai.
