This refers to the article, “ >Discretion, the better part of valour ” (Sept. 20). It is absolutely necessary that we protect the identity of whistle-blowers. Our focus should be on following up on the information that has been revealed with appropriate investigation and prosecution, rather than identifying the people behind such revelations. This would place whistle-blowers at a huge disadvantage and threaten their lives, livelihoods and families. What’s more, they will be deterred from revealing information in the interest of the public. Moreover, our police force is not capable of giving them protection, given its highly politicised nature.
