Today, the general situation, the numbers and the status of reserved categories, their demands and their needs have undergone a drastic change (“ >Reservations are not just about quotas ,” March 27). Reservation is used by the majority to influence politics. There have also been segregations of the reserved — into those who enjoy the benefits of reservations and pass on those benefits to future generations — even though they now have access to all the resources — and those who are still unaware that such benefits prevail and continue to live in darkness. The government should constitute a committee to study the needs and the neglect of this second section and come up with a better policy.

The solution to the problem of caste discrimination is considered a greater nuisance than the problem itself. As the writer says, instances of misuse of reservation cannot pave the way for a dismantling of reservation altogether. One also cannot deny the fact that the discrimination and suppression of SCs and STs still persist. The recent incident of caste Hindus doing something unmentionable to a Dalit is an example. Those on the sidelines need to be treated as equal citizens and brought up in the hierarchy.

Reservation solely on the factor of economic criteria will not be effective in tackling issues concerning caste inequalities. Socio-economic criteria could be a better tool in evaluating the need for reservation.
