The Bihar hooch tragedy points to the impracticability of prohibition (Editorial, Aug.19). A better alternative would be to educate people to discard ‘drinking’. There are some forms of anti-liquor informal education. However, these are too insufficient to serve the purpose. What is needed is to truly elevate individuals, in intellectual, moral and social capabilities, with the grand idea of trying to free the nation from addiction. Most people are aware of family problems, bad social reputation, ill-health and untimely death that are associated with liquor. To address the issue, a lot of diverse data on drinkers needs to be collected to fine-tune prohibition policies.
