The sending of legal notice, by a law student and her brother to the Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju for his remark that 90 per cent of Indians are fools (Dec. 11) is unfortunate. The youngsters should go by the substance of his comment rather than take his words literally.
Justice Katju was talking about the innocence of most Indians, who were easily misled by mischievous elements in the name of religion.
He pointed to a very sensitive issue in the larger interest of the nation. Do we ever drag our grandfathers, fathers or elder brothers to court for calling us ignorant?

The two youngsters deserve to be lauded for their bold decision. India is a land that has produced countless intellectuals and great people. We still have living legends among us — like Abdul Kalam — who, defying their age, work tirelessly for the nation.
