It is unfortunate, but not unexpected, that a CBI Special Court has >“found no evidence” against BJP president Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter cases (Dec.31). If the CBI has taken a decade on the case, only to find no evidence against Mr. Shah, then it should have logically asked who killed Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife and aide Tulsiram Prajapati, and why. The CBI has once again proved the oft-repeated apprehension that it is a “caged parrot” and a “handmaiden” of the government.

The court finding substance in Mr. Shah’s main contention that he was involved in the case for political reasons is too serious an observation to be ignored. For this reason alone, the CBI must challenge the order to seek vindication of its often questioned credibility. One is sure that there will be a political slugfest.
