The suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal by the Akhilesh Yadav government has triggered outrage across the country. But will it make a difference to the way the government functions?
If yes, we will see more veracious and daredevil bureaucrats in future. That Ms Nagpal took on the sand mafia shows she was clear in her vision and was determined to take decisions in complex circumstances. Her action should act as an inspiration to all good-doers who remain silent under political pressure.

It is interesting that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to intervene in Ms Nagpal’s case and ensure that she is not treated unfairly.
While it is heartening that one of the most powerful persons of the country is on the side of the honest officer, one wonders why she did not act similarly to defend Ashok Khemka, an upright IAS officer from Haryana, who has been transferred 44 times in 22 years. Haryana is, after all, ruled by her own Congress. Shouldn’t charity begin at home?

The Centre talks of police reforms, transparency, accountability and good governance but when the time comes to protect its officers, it looks the other way.
Such an attitude will only demoralise honest officers, people and civil service aspirants.
