Myanmar’s road map

November 19, 2012 01:35 am | Updated 01:35 am IST

Myanmar’s democratic structure has a long path of evolution ahead of it (“Pragmatic road to reconciliation,” Nov.17). This rests on building its basic democratic institutions, creating an independent judiciary, ensuring reconciliation among its vast and varied 130 ethnic communities, and creating a multi-ethnic secular state backed by an effective party cadre. Aung San Suu Kyi must also face up to the challenge of making Myanmar an all-weather ally to its regional neighbours. Let us hope that it becomes a vibrant player in the South Asian regional and security architecture.
