The article “At the crossroads of mediaphobia” (Jan. 30) has rightly pointed out how moral policing of the media, particularly internet-based, has become the favourite of politicians. People are beginning to enjoy online information more than ever before. Freedom of speech is welcome. But we should not forget that rights without duties will create more chaos than order in society.

Freedom of expression with reasonable restrictions is the basic pillar of democracy. The internet has, through social networking sites, provided an opportunity for people to come together and express their concerns in a constructive way. In view of this, the government should encourage people to use the different sites to participate in governance, rather than restrict communication in a protectionist manner.
