Media coverage

The Hindu has always maintained a high standard of journalism. Its coverage of the India-Pakistan border skirmishes along the LoC was no doubt different from the coverage in the jingoistic sections of the media.

But the article “ >Manmohan Singh’s abject surrender ” (Jan. 24) by A.G. Noorani trivialises the barbaric act of mutilation of our soldiers’ bodies. True, the media should exercise restraint. But it should also respect the emotions of the men in uniform and the nation.

The coverage of the LoC skirmishes, particularly by the electronic media, exposed the thin line between media freedom and sensationalism. The media is supposed to act as a pressure group to ensure that the government is on the right course. The Prime Minister, a man of vision, however, changed the most appropriate course for two reasons — media pressure and myopic political gain.
