Maldives development

This refers to the editorial “Trouble in paradise” (Feb. 8). Mohammed Nasheed did well to step down as President of the Maldives. His act will go a long way in strengthening the institutions of the young democracy. Mr. Nasheed's act should serve as an example to not only nations ruled by dictators but also democracies like India. While it shows despots that the right thing to do is not to cling to power, it also shows the way to many of our politicians who refuse to step down despite glaring corruption charges.

Ritvik Chaturvedi,

New Delhi

As the Maldives is considered an Indian outpost, China and Pakistan are watching the developments keenly. The Indian navy has been providing support and assistance to the Maldives. One hopes India's relations with that country will remain firm and stable as ever.

R. Jishi,
